The Personal Conduct of Arya Samaj Leaders
October 04, 2009 by Shruti Prakash

Revised October 9, 2009

The Personal Conduct of Arya Samaj Leaders, Oct 4, 2009, By Shruti B Prakash

A recent event at the Peel Arya Samaj has given me much to think about regarding the personal behavior of Arya Samaj Leaders - not so much the specific misbehavior of the individual at the Peel Arya Samaj but the general issue of personal conduct of Samaj Leadership.

A bit of background.  The Chairman of the Board of Executives at the Peel Arya Samaj (Chairman) delivered a “speech - joke” in a recent wedding reception which was offensive and was received badly by members of the audience.

[ The reference link to the joke has been removed due to the vulgar nature of the joke]

As a consequence of this event, many Samaj members are reportedly outraged with demands for the immediate resignation/dismissal of the Chairman. In defense of his actions, the Chairman indicated that he was acting not on behalf of the Peel Arya Samaj but on a personal level representing his family.

We now come to the main thrust of this Blog Entry. Regardless of the outcome of the issue at the Peel Arya Samaj – dismissal, resignation, reprimand, apology, or no action, I wish the participants of this conflict nobility in their quest for resolution.

The main issue I bring forward to you for discussion is this:

·         Can a leader of ANY organization turn on, turn off his/her hat as leader and excuse behavior unbecoming or embarrassing to the organization?

·         Must the personal conduct of Arya Samaj Leaders pass minimum expectations of nobility, morality and be of such caliber to be consistent with the 10 principles of the Arya Samaj?

·         Should this level of personal conduct be expected inside and outside the Mandir?

I encourage a discussion on this subject – please post a reply below.

Addendum by the Author: October 9, 2009

Dear Viewer:

Due to the fury of the responses from the public and the graphic and personal nature of the responses, the actual conversation threads have been removed from this blog entry. I do however wish to summarize the points expressed by the Samaj Membership at large (particularly from the PAS)

  • The chairman needs to resign - overwhelming response
  • Elections need to be re-instated at the PAS
  • The lack of response from the President of the PAS - including the Pandits - despite phone calls, personal emails is unacceptable. This has contributed to the fury of the general PAS membership

The author wishes again to reiterate and wish the parties involved in this issue continuing nobility in their pursuit of adequate resolution.
